Capacity Gaps in Sustainable Agriculture in the Federated States of Micronesia

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is grappling with significant capacity gaps in sustainable agriculture, which are exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. The region's reliance on imported food poses substantial risks to food security, especially given that about 90% of food is brought in from outside sources. Additionally, the limited diversity of local crop production hampers the ability of communities to adapt to changing environmental conditions. Many smallholder farmers lack access to training and technical resources, further limiting their capacity to implement sustainable practices that could enhance local agricultural resilience.

With a diverse population spread across many small islands, the FSM faces unique challenges, including limited access to infrastructure, markets, and education. Younger generations are often not sufficiently engaged in agricultural practices, leading to a disconnect between traditional farming methods and modern sustainable agriculture techniques. As youth are vital to fostering sustainable practices for the future, addressing their training needs is crucial for increasing local food production capacities.

The funding initiative aimed at providing technical assistance and training to youth in sustainable agriculture practices is a critical step towards bridging these capacity gaps. Participants will receive hands-on experience in crucial areas such as permaculture and regenerative farming techniques, addressing immediate food security concerns while simultaneously promoting environmental health. The project targets the development of crop diversity and improved soil health, which are essential for resilience against climate impacts.

By establishing community-supported agriculture programs, the project not only supports individual farmers but also encourages collaboration among local youth, fostering community ties and shared knowledge.
