H2: Target Outcomes for Micronesian Cancer Studies The Federated States of Micronesia comprise four states spanning 2,700 km with no domestic oncology treatment center. Five-year survival for breast cancer is estimated at 48 percent, compared with 89 percent reported by Guam’s registry. Proposed projects must therefore measure either incidence shifts or stage-at-diagnosis changes within existing primary-care records rather than survival endpoints that require unavailable follow-up infrastructure.

Because each state maintains separate vital-statistics systems, outcome metrics must be harmonized across Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei, and Kosrae health information platforms. Projects that demonstrate a 10-percentage-point improvement in early-stage detection rates within two states after 36 months will satisfy the primary performance threshold.

H2: Why These Outcomes Matter in FSM Geographic isolation means patients travel an average 180 km by sea to reach a hospital with ultrasound. Late-stage presentation is therefore the dominant driver of mortality rather than tumor biology. Funding that supports portable ultrasound training for health assistants on outer islands directly addresses this bottleneck. Outcome data must be disaggregated by state to avoid masking disparities between high-access Pohnpei and low-access Yap outer islands.
